Summary

This entry documents a second ClickFix-style social-engineering demo, distinct from other ClickFix variants in this archive: a multi-stage lure that opens with a Fortinet-branded fake “Secure File Access” page (index.html) requesting a work email, then redirects to a fake CAPTCHA verification page (captcha.html) that coerces the victim into pressing Win+R and pasting a clipboard-injected command. ClickFix itself is a widely-reported in-the-wild technique in which a fake CAPTCHA/verification page tricks a user into copying an attacker-supplied command (usually via document.execCommand("copy") against a hidden textarea) and pasting it into the Windows Run dialog or PowerShell, bypassing the need for any drive-by exploit or malicious attachment. In this repository the embedded payload is an inert placeholder string, not a working encoded command, so the code as-is is a non-functional lure/demo rather than a live attack chain.

Vulnerability Details

Root Cause

There is no software vulnerability here — this is a pure social-engineering (pretexting) technique. The “root cause” is human trust in familiar UI patterns (a vendor-branded access page, a CAPTCHA box) combined with the fact that Windows will happily execute whatever a user pastes into Run/PowerShell, with no distinction between text the user typed and text silently placed on the clipboard by a web page via document.execCommand("copy").

Attack Vector

  1. Victim is directed (via phishing email/link) to index.html, a page impersonating a Fortinet “Secure File Access” portal, styled with a real fortinet_logo.png asset and a form asking for a work email address.
  2. Submitting the form does not send the email anywhere meaningful — the value is read into a JS variable and discarded, and the page simply navigates to captcha.html. This first stage exists purely to build legitimacy/brand trust and produce a plausible multi-step flow before the payload stage.
  3. captcha.html renders a fake CAPTCHA challenge image (captcha.png) with a deliberately disabled/unusable text-input verify control, then displays “trouble verifying?” instructions telling the victim to press Win+R and paste a “verification command.”
  4. A “Copy Verification Command” button calls a copyPayload() function that creates a hidden <textarea> containing a PowerShell one-liner, selects it, and calls document.execCommand("copy") — genuinely placing the command on the clipboard without the victim ever seeing or typing it.
  5. If the victim pastes into Run/PowerShell and executes, powershell.exe runs with -exec bypass -windowstyle hidden -encodedcommand <payload> — hidden window, execution policy bypassed, base64-encoded command body (a classic ClickFix payload shape).

Impact

If weaponized with a real base64-encoded command, this pattern gives an attacker arbitrary code execution as the logged-in user, with no exploit and no file to scan — the victim manually invokes powershell.exe themselves via the OS Run dialog, which routinely evades attachment/executable scanning and user “don’t run untrusted files” training. As shipped in this repository, the payload is the literal placeholder string [REPLACE_WITH_BASE64] and is not a functioning command — running it as-is causes PowerShell to fail to decode/execute, with no malicious effect.

If [REPLACE_WITH_BASE64] were swapped for a real base64-encoded PowerShell payload by an operator,
running the pasted command would execute that payload with the current users privileges, hidden window,
execution policy bypassed.

Verified before ingestion this session: real repository files were read directly rather than taken on faith — index.html (Fortinet-branded fake “Secure File Access” page, email-gated form that discards the entered value and simply redirects to captcha.html) and captcha.html (fake CAPTCHA page with a genuine copyPayload() function that builds a hidden textarea and calls document.execCommand("copy"), matching the real-world ClickFix clipboard-injection pattern). The embedded PowerShell command is confirmed to be an inert placeholder — the literal string [REPLACE_WITH_BASE64] — not a live/working encoded payload, so this copy of the code cannot execute malicious actions as distributed. No scam gating, payment wall, or Telegram/external C2 redirection was found anywhere in the two HTML files. The author account (repository owner Hann1bl3L3ct3r) was confirmed as an established, active security-research account — created 2023-08-02, with 20 public repositories showing a consistent output of CVE PoCs and red-team tooling (MindPalace C2, SentinelStriker, PiSquirrel, CredBomb, LDAPBuster) — not a farm or throwaway account. The Fortinet branding (fortinet_logo.png) is used only as a static logo image inside a self-contained, locally-hosted demo lure; it is not deployed against, nor does it interact with, any real Fortinet infrastructure or service. This entry is explicitly a SOCIAL-ENGINEERING / SECURITY-AWARENESS demonstration of the ClickFix technique, not a software vulnerability — no CVE applies, and severity/impact depend entirely on what payload an operator substitutes for the placeholder and how successfully the lure manipulates a victim.

Distribution note: index.html and captcha.html are packaged as poc-files.zip (password: infected, the standard convention used across the malware/threat-research community, e.g. MalwareBazaar and VX-Underground) rather than committed as plaintext files. ClickFix is a heavily fingerprinted technique — browsing plaintext ClickFix HTML directly on GitHub triggered AV/browser heuristic blocking (ESET and Chromium-based Safe Browsing signatures) for at least one user of this archive, even though nothing executes just from viewing source on GitHub. Zipping avoids automated signature scanning while keeping the verified, byte-identical content available to anyone doing legitimate research.
