Affected Target

FieldValue
Software / SystemRocket.Chat (OAuth2 login flow)
Versions Affected< 8.3.0, < 8.2.1, < 8.1.2, < 8.0.3, < 7.13.5, < 7.12.6, < 7.11.6, < 7.10.9
Language / PlatformPython 3 (PoC), Rocket.Chat server (Node.js/MongoDB)
Authentication RequiredNo
Network Access RequiredYes

Summary

Rocket.Chat’s OAuth2 authentication flow builds a MongoDB query from attacker-influenced OAuth2 profile/identity fields without sufficient sanitization, allowing NoSQL injection operators to be smuggled into the user lookup query. By crafting a malicious OAuth2 response, an attacker can manipulate the query Rocket.Chat uses to match/create the authenticated user record, enabling account takeover or privilege escalation (including an --escalate mode in the PoC) without valid credentials.

Vulnerability Details

Root Cause

Insufficient validation of OAuth2-provided identity fields before they are used to construct MongoDB queries during user lookup/creation, permitting injection of MongoDB query operators (NoSQL injection).

Attack Vector

  1. Attacker sets up or manipulates an OAuth2 identity provider response (or intercepts/forges the OAuth2 callback) so that identity fields contain MongoDB operators instead of plain strings.
  2. Rocket.Chat’s OAuth2 handler passes these fields directly into a MongoDB query used to find or create the corresponding local user.
  3. The injected operators alter query semantics, allowing the attacker to match an arbitrary existing user record (e.g. an administrator) instead of creating/matching their own.
  4. With --escalate, the PoC drives this further toward privileged account access.

Impact

Unauthenticated NoSQL injection leading to authentication bypass and potential privilege escalation to administrative Rocket.Chat accounts.

Environment / Lab Setup

Target: Rocket.Chat instance with OAuth2 login enabled (vulnerable version range)
Attacker: Python 3 with `requests` (pip install -r requirements.txt)

Proof of Concept

PoC Script

See poc_cve_2026_29198.py in this folder.

1
2
pip3 install -r requirements.txt
python3 poc_cve_2026_29198.py --url <target-domain> --escalate -v

The script drives the OAuth2 login flow against the target, injects NoSQL operators into the identity payload, and (with --escalate) attempts to leverage the resulting account match/creation to obtain elevated access, printing verbose progress with -v.

Detection & Indicators of Compromise

Signs of compromise:

  • Unexpected new admin sessions immediately following OAuth2 callbacks with malformed identity data
  • MongoDB query logs referencing operators in fields expected to hold plain user identifiers
  • Authentication events with mismatched OAuth2 provider identity vs. resulting Rocket.Chat account

Remediation

ActionDetail
Primary fixUpgrade to Rocket.Chat >= 8.3.0, 8.2.1, 8.1.2, 8.0.3, 7.13.5, 7.12.6, 7.11.6, or 7.10.9 depending on branch
Interim mitigationDisable OAuth2 login until patched, or strictly validate/sanitize all OAuth2 identity fields server-side before use in database queries
