FieldValue
Software / System“Integration for ActiveCampaign and Contact Form 7, WPForms, Elementor, Ninja Forms” WordPress plugin
Versions Affected<= 1.1.1
Language / PlatformPHP / WordPress
Authentication RequiredNo
Network Access RequiredYes

Summary

The plugin’s cf7-active-campaign.php component calls PHP’s maybe_unserialize() on user-supplied form field values without validation before forwarding them to ActiveCampaign. An unauthenticated attacker can submit a crafted, serialized PHP object as a form field value; if a suitable POP (property-oriented programming) gadget chain exists elsewhere in the WordPress installation (core, active theme, or other installed plugins), this can be leveraged into remote code execution, arbitrary file deletion, or data exfiltration when the object is unserialized and its magic methods (__wakeup, __destruct, etc.) execute.

Vulnerability Details

Root Cause

Unsafe deserialization (CWE-502): maybe_unserialize() is invoked on unauthenticated, user-controlled form-field input without verifying that the input is expected/safe plain data, allowing PHP object injection when the value is instead a crafted serialized object.

Attack Vector

  1. Detect the vulnerable plugin on the target (via known plugin paths / readme.txt / active CF7, WPForms, Elementor, or Ninja Forms integration).
  2. Identify a form connected to the ActiveCampaign integration.
  3. Submit a form field value containing a base64/serialized PHP object payload instead of ordinary text.
  4. The plugin’s ActiveCampaign integration code calls maybe_unserialize() on this value, instantiating the attacker-crafted object.
  5. If a POP gadget chain is reachable in the target’s installed code, its magic methods fire during unserialization/destruction, enabling RCE, file deletion, or data exfiltration depending on the gadget chain used.

Impact

Potential remote code execution, arbitrary file deletion, or data exfiltration on any WordPress site running an unpatched version of the plugin, contingent on the presence of an exploitable POP gadget chain elsewhere in the site’s PHP codebase — a common enough condition in WordPress environments with multiple plugins/themes installed.

Environment / Lab Setup

Target: WordPress site running "Integration for ActiveCampaign..." plugin <= 1.1.1, with a
connected Contact Form 7 / WPForms / Elementor / Ninja Forms form
Attacker: Any HTTP client (CVE-2026-9691.py provided, requires requests + beautifulsoup4)

Proof of Concept

PoC Script

See CVE-2026-9691.py in this folder.

1
2
pip install requests beautifulsoup4
python3 CVE-2026-9691.py <target_url>

The script detects the plugin, locates connected Contact Form 7 forms, and submits a crafted serialized-PHP-object payload as a form field value to demonstrate that the deserialization sink is reachable by an unauthenticated user.

Detection & Indicators of Compromise

Signs of compromise:

  • Form field values matching PHP serialization syntax (O:<len>:"<class>":...) in web server / WAF logs.
  • Unexpected file deletions or outbound requests correlating with form submissions to CF7/WPForms/Elementor/Ninja Forms endpoints.
  • Errors referencing unserialize()/maybe_unserialize() in PHP error logs tied to form submissions.

Remediation

ActionDetail
Primary fixUpdate the plugin to a version beyond 1.1.1 that removes or safely sandboxes maybe_unserialize() on user input
Interim mitigationDisable the plugin’s ActiveCampaign integration until patched; add a WAF rule blocking form submissions containing PHP serialization syntax markers

CVE-2026-9691 Integration for ActiveCampaign PHP Object Injection Exploit
CVSS: 8.1 (High)

Unauthenticated attackers can inject arbitrary PHP objects by exploiting
unsafe deserialization of form field values. The vulnerability exists in
the cf7-active-campaign.php file where maybe_unserialize() is called on
user-supplied input without validation. If a POP chain exists, this can
lead to RCE, file deletion, or data exfiltration.
